Working memory – the brain’s ability to hold information for brief periods of time – is fast becoming one of the most important and researched subjects in the scientific community. Experts from around the world are uncovering new insights into its central significance for many of the brain’s critical activities, such as learning, reasoning and focus.

Of this growing body of research, the most promising breakthrough is the discovery that working memory capacity – once thought to be a set characteristic – can in fact be expanded through focused training. First discovered in 1999 at the renowned Karolinska Institute, the original researchers made the training available beyond the laboratory in 2003 under the name Cogmed Working Memory Training. Since then, independent researchers at top universities have validated the effectiveness of the Cogmed program for a range of populations, with studies published in leading peer reviewed journals.
